Dealer vs Independent Mechanic

Updated November 6, 2026

Is It Better to Go to a Dealer or an Independent Mechanic?

Use a dealer for recalls, warranty repairs and hard, model-specific problems. Use a trusted independent shop for routine maintenance and most out-of-warranty repairs, usually at a lower labor rate. Under federal law, a new-car warranty generally cannot be voided just because an independent shop did your routine maintenance. Keep your receipts.

Your Warranty

The FTC explains that under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer generally cannot void your warranty just because you used an independent shop or aftermarket parts, unless those parts caused the problem or the parts are provided free under the warranty. Follow the maintenance schedule and keep every receipt.
