Starting numbers are workshop.broker planning assumptions, not quotes or survey averages. Tax rules vary by state, and some states also tax labor.

How Do You Check If a Repair Quote Is Fair?

Multiply the labor rate by the hours billed, add parts, fees and tax, and compare the total with a second written estimate on the same job. As a planning range, independent shops often charge about $90–$160 per hour. A big gap is a reason to ask questions, not automatic proof of overcharging.

Repair Cost Questions

How much is labor at a mechanic?

As a planning range, independent shops often charge about $90–$160 per hour and dealers about $140–$220 or more. Multiply the rate by the book hours on your estimate. A job billed at 2.5 hours at $130 is $325 in labor, before parts, fees and tax.

Why is my repair quote so high?

Common reasons are high book hours, dealer-only or OEM parts, a high local labor rate, or extra repairs bundled together. Ask for parts and labor listed separately, ask which items can wait, and get a second estimate on the same job.

Are these prices quotes?

No. The presets are workshop.broker planning assumptions to give you a starting point, and real prices vary by vehicle, region and shop. Replace them with the numbers from your own written estimate.
